Marco Polo was accompanied on his trips by his father and uncle both of whom had been to China previouslythough neither of them published any known works about their journeys. He also refers to Japan by its Chinese name Zipang or Cipangu. Many copies of the book were created and it was translated into several languages. The wealth of new geographic information recorded by Polo was widely used in the late 15th and the 16th centuries, during the age of the great European voyages of discovery and conquest. His family were well-known merchants, not explorers.

While Marco Polo and his ghostwriter Rustichello of Pisa were undoubtedly great storytellers, historians to this day continue to debate exactly how true some of their stories were.
